15-11-2024 Elena Dubinets is the new artistic director of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

Elena Dubinets will be the new artistic director of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. She will succeed Ulrike Niehoff, who left the orchestra in 2023. Dubinets, who is Russian by birth, is now the artistic director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

She started there in 2021 and will therefore exchange London for Amsterdam after only three years. Before that, she worked in top positions at the symphony orchestras of Seattle and Atlanta in the US. In addition to being an experienced artistic programmer, she is a scientist. She taught at universities in the US, Russia and Costa Rica, published five books and wrote hundreds of articles. Her most recent book was about Russian composers who left their homeland.

Social role

According to the ‘London Philharmonic’, she finds the social role of music very important. She tries to involve minorities and give female composers a platform. Dubinets also refers to it in a reaction to her appointment: “This is one of the most inspiring positions in the performing arts in the world, not least because of the important role the orchestra plays in the communities it serves and in education”.

New music

She also praises “the rich history of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the excellence and dedication of its musicians and conductors, and its long tradition of collaborations with living composers”. Dubinets also tries to stimulate the writing of new music: she was the initiator of more than 100 newly composed pieces.

She will work with general manager Dominik Winterling and director of operations David Bazen at the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

25-09-2024 Beth Taylor - Des Knaben Wunderhorn

Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn, as part of the Mahler Festival, on 10-05-2025 in the Small Hall.

Mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska had to cancel for this concert. Guest programmer and accompanist Julius Drake has found a worthy replacement in mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor.

Beth Taylor is at the onset of a major international career. Recent engagements have led the young Scottish mezzo-soprano to the Nancy Opera House in her role debut as Bradamante in a new production of Alcina, to the Concertgebouw Amsterdam in Mozart’s Krönungsmesse KV317 at the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, to Aix-en-Provence, where she made her festival debut in a new production of Rihm’s Jakob Lenz, to the New Generation Festival in Florence, where she appeared as Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro, to the Opéra de Lyon as Melanto, Anfinomo and Fortuna in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, to the Longborough Festival as Arnalta in L’incoronazione di Poppea, and to the Iford Arts Festival as Rosmira in Partenope.

She has performed many popular and lesser-known oratorios and sacred cantatas with notable ensembles including the Dunedin Consort, the Sixteen, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Filarmorchestra, the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, the Ricecar Ensemble and the Instruments of Time and Truth. Her popular recital engagements with such notable pianists as Julius Drake, Marcia Hadjimarkos and rising star Hamish Brown have taken her across Europe including France, Germany, Italy, the UK and Denmark.

Other operatic roles in her repertoire include Constanza (L’isola disabitata, Haydn), Ottone (Agrippina, Handel), Irene (Theodora, Handel), Cornelia (Giulio Cesare, Handel), Old Woman (The Day After, Dove) and Ramiro (La finta giardinera, Mozart). Beth is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and The Open University. She is currently refining her technique under the tutelage of Jennifer Larmore and Iain Paton. Beth has participated in masterclasses with renowned artists such as Sarah Connolly, Susan Graham, Sir Thomas Allen, Sophie Daneman and Dame Emma Kirkby.

End of season

14-06-2024 Christian Thielemann has unfortunately had to cancel his performances with the Concertgebouw Orchestra due to illness. We are very grateful to Manfred Honeck for agreeing to step in at short notice.

08-06-2024 Jaap van Zweden ending tenure as New York Philharmonic music director after 6 seasons

Jaap van Zweden’s brief tenure as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic concluded on a grand note in the orchestra’s hometown with performances of Mahler’s monumental Resurrection Symphony. A 90-minute score of great complexity certainly serves as a poignant farewell for a music director bidding adieu to an ensemble, especially one as deeply entrenched in Mahler’s legacy as the New York Phil. Van Zweden previously conducted the same score in his final performance as Music Director of the Dallas Symphony before assuming his role with the Philharmonic.

His career began as an Assistant Conductor to Leonard Bernstein at the New York Philharmonic. He then returned to Holland where he was appointed Assistant Conductor to Bernard Haitink at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

07-03-2024 Mahler Symphony No. 1 by Kirill Kondrashin

110 years ago, on 06-03-1914, Kirill Kondrashin was born in Moscow. As one of the great conductors from the Soviet Union, he encountered a lot of opposition from the authorities. In 1978 he applied for political asylum in the Netherlands, where the Concertgebouw Orchestra appointed him as permanent conductor alongside Bernard Haitink. On 07-03-1981, one day after his 67th birthday and just hours after a historic performance of Symphomy No. 1 by Gustav Mahler in the Great Hall, he died of a heart attack.

07-03-1981 Amsterdam (Royal Concertgebouw): Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 1. NDR Sinfonieorchester, Kyrill Kondrashin (1914 Moscow – 1981 Amsterdam). Kondrashin replaced Klaus Tennstedt who had canceled from Hannover at the very last moment due to a disagreement between him and the orchestra. Kondrashin first refused because he was tired. The day before be returned from a tour in America. Eventually he decided to conduct after the break, following a rehearsal of just 20 minutes of Gustav Mahlers – Symphony No. 1.

He died at home the same evening at 23:10 from a heart attack and was buried in the cemetery Westerveld in Driehuis, the Netherlands. Conductor Kirill Kondrashin made his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1968. He returned often and from mid-70s for four weeks per season. Until 1979 he was guest conductor, then he was appointed Permanent Conductor with Bernard Haitink (1929) as Chief conductor. From this last concert with maestro Kondrashin are audio recordings available. Attended in 1981 by Bert van der Waal van Dijk (Mahler Foundation).

29-02-2024 Dream debut Dinis Sousa in Amsterdam

Dinis Sousa (35) makes a dream debut in Amsterdam. The anti-maestro guided the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Monteverdi Choir through “Ein deutsches Requiem” (Brahms) with great panache. Until last August, hardly anyone had heard of Sousa. His career was catapulted when he had to replace conductor Eliot Gardiner on a tour with the opera “Les Troyens” (Berlioz).

Dinis Sousa is Principal Conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

Royal Northern Sinfonia is a British chamber orchestra, founded in Newcastle upon Tyne and currently based in Gateshead. For the first 46 years of its history the orchestra gave most of its concerts at the Newcastle City Hall. It also gave monthly concerts in Middlesbrough town hall and at Stockton & Billingham Technical College in Billingham. Since 2004 the orchestra has been resident at Sage Gateshead. In June 2013 Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the title ‘Royal’ on the orchestra, formally naming it Royal Northern Sinfonia.

22-01-2024 New RCO Brand Identity: Enticing pictures

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has updated its brand identity. An important element is the eye-catching photography by Carli Hermès.

Since January 2024 the Concertgebouw Orchestra has a new brand identity, a result of the orchestra’s growing ambition to reach people of all ages and backgrounds. This new visual identity, developed by design agency Motif, gives the orchestra a more direct and emotional appeal and it also works very well with digital media.

The crown motif will be retained and given a prominent place as the pictorial mark in visual communications, in combination with the diamond shape. The word Koninklijk (Royal) is also back in the logo, and international communications will use the orchestra’s English name. This will increase recognition, by both people we already know and segments of the population that we want to reach better. We’ll be relying more on images in order to get the attention of potential new audiences.

‘I make portraits, pictures with the energy and the feel of the music, so that you want to hear what you’re seeing. Music is energy.’

The orchestra will be working with the photographer Carli Hermès over the coming months. Everyone knows Hermès, although they may not be aware of it. His photos appear in many advertising campaigns, as well as in national and international magazines. His non-commissioned work is also highly regarded. Now it’s the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s turn to call on his unique visual language. ‘The message has to be recognisable in text and image.’

15-01-2024 Mahler Foundation and Marina Mahler at Festival
